West Virginia Registered Agent.co publishes this bulletin, sells the service listed in position one, and earns money whenever a reader acts on the ranking. Our assessment of our own offering is an interested assessment and should be weighed accordingly. The figures are a separate matter entirely. Each was recorded from the vendor's own published materials during a July 2026 review, and the list still contains a rate below ours.

Annual Price Bulletin: Nine West Virginia Registered Agent Services

Those were the advertised rates at the time of the July 2026 review. Vendors in this category revise pricing without notice, so the current page should be confirmed before any purchase, ours as readily as anyone else's.

The Basis for Our Own Placement

Position one is a claim, and these are the specifics supporting it. Documents served at our West Virginia office are scanned into your dashboard on the same business day and announced by email, which prevents a response window from opening without your knowledge. The rate is $99 annually, and renewal holds at $99 instead of stepping upward in year two. A single product appears at checkout, with no tiered menu attached to it. Our address occupies the public filing so that a personal one need not. The only additional charge on the account is $15 per item for scanning mail that falls outside service of process, disclosed on this page rather than at invoice time.

One claim we decline to make is the lowest price of all. Measured by published sticker, the cheapest registered agent service in West Virginia belongs to BetterLegal at $90 per year, nine dollars beneath us. The defensible statement is the narrower one: at $99 we sit among the lowest flat yearly rates catalogued here, same-day scanning is built into that figure rather than sold beside it, and the amount does not move at any renewal.

Assessments of the Eight Competing Services

2. Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest is the strongest alternative in this bulletin, and second position reflects genuine regard. The company publishes exact figures, staffs its phone lines with its own employees, and adopted address privacy as policy well before the industry turned it into a slogan. Two qualifications apply. The complimentary first year is available only where Northwest performs the formation; purchased separately, agent service is priced at $125 annually. The reduction to $100 per state requires registrations in at least five states, a threshold a West Virginia-only company does not approach. The operative figure for most readers is therefore $125, which is $26 above ours at each renewal.

3. BetterLegal

BetterLegal publishes the lowest rate in this bulletin, $90 per year, confirmed as the renewal price during the July 2026 review. That same review located no plain statement of first-year terms, an omission that carries weight on a page organized entirely around published pricing. A fully disclosed figure outranks a slightly lower, partially disclosed one. A reader who reaches BetterLegal's checkout, sees the first-year number, and finds it acceptable will have secured an inexpensive agent.

4. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer holds the agent role at $125 per year and applies that same figure across every membership tier, without an introductory rate at any level. Pricing discipline of that kind is uncommon in this category and deserves acknowledgment. The relevant question is suitability. Rocket Lawyer operates as a legal subscription service, and the agent product sits within a wider catalog of documents and attorney consultations. Regular use of that catalog makes $125 reasonable. A business that needs nothing beyond a West Virginia address and quick scanning would be funding a full subscription platform in order to draw on a single feature within it.

5. ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness produces some of the most refined onboarding software among these vendors, and that is a legitimate strength. Its pricing structure warrants close attention. Bought as a standalone product, the agent service is priced at $99 plus state fees for the initial year and renews thereafter at $199 annually. Because each subsequent year carries the $199 rate, $199 is the figure belonging in the comparison. Measured there, the software advantage carries a $100 annual premium over our flat rate.

6. Bizee (formerly Incfile)

Bizee, formerly Incfile, folds agent coverage into its formation tiers without a charge, for a term of three months up to twelve depending on which package is purchased. A founder already committed to forming through Bizee receives real value from that inclusion. The corresponding obligation is calendar discipline: standalone renewal is $149 per year once the included period ends, and that end date is easily missed precisely because the coverage began without a charge.

7. LegalZoom

At $249 per year LegalZoom carries the highest flat rate in this bulletin, renews automatically, and showed no first-year reduction that the July 2026 review could identify. The premium purchases the most widely recognized brand in consumer legal services. It purchases no additional standing under West Virginia law, which applies identical expectations to an agent charging $249 and one charging $90: an in-state address, availability through business hours, and prompt transmission of documents once served. Whether recognition justifies two and a half times our rate is a judgment left to the reader.

8. Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings advertises $149 for agent service, billed quarterly rather than annually. Annualized, the cost approaches $596, the highest effective rate in this bulletin, and the July 2026 review identified no first-year reduction working against it. Quarterly billing also obscures totals: four payments of $149 present more mildly than one payment of $596 while costing no less. One year under Swyft costs approximately what six annual terms with us would.

9. Inc Authority

Inc Authority supplies the first year without charge and declines to publish the second-year figure. The July 2026 review examined the homepage, the premium package pages, and the support answers; no renewal price appeared in print anywhere among them, a pattern that ordinarily indicates the number is disclosed at checkout or during a sales call. This bulletin ranks by published pricing, which places an unpublished price at the bottom. The free year is real; the price that follows it is information the vendor withheld, and the withholding is itself worth weighing.

What § 31B-1-108 Permits Rather Than Requires

West Virginia drafted its agent provision in permissive terms. Section 31B-1-108(a) provides that a limited liability company "may continuously maintain in this state" a designated office and an agent for service of process. The verb is may. No representation should be made, here or anywhere else, that West Virginia law compels a company to engage or to designate an agent.

The statute supplies a substitute instead. Where a company maintains no agent, the Secretary of State functions as its statutory attorney-in-fact for service of process. Papers filed against the company go to a state office, are recorded there, and move onward through an administrative sequence indifferent to whatever deadline is attached to them, with the entire transaction sitting on the public record. A designated agent replaces that sequence with direct delivery to a party the company selected, on the day the documents arrive. The nine services in this bulletin therefore compete to supply a choice, not to satisfy a mandate.

Subsection (b) identifies who qualifies: an individual resident of West Virginia, a domestic corporation, another limited liability company, or a foreign corporation or foreign company authorized to transact business in the state.

Agent Changes: One Application, a $15 Fee

West Virginia consolidates several updates into a single instrument. Form AAO, the state's combined change application, handles the agent, the officers, and the addresses in one filing, and the Business & Licensing Division of the Secretary of State charges $15 to record it. A consent line on the document must be signed by the party being appointed, so an incoming agent affirms the role in writing. Cooperation from the outgoing agent is required at no point in the process, which means no vendor in this bulletin has any ability to obstruct a departure. Submitted through the state's online portal, the $15 carries a small additional processing charge. The Annual Report and Two West Virginia Exemptions

The recurring obligation is the Annual Report at a flat $25. Filing opens on January 1, the last on-time day is June 30, and July 1 stands as the due date. A report submitted after that date incurs a $50 late fee, bringing the total owed to $75. The consequence beyond the fee is the more serious one: administrative dissolution becomes available to the state once a company has let 60 days pass beyond the due date without delivering the report, a result carried by W. Va. Code § 31B-2-211 together with § 59-1-2a. Two months goes quickly for an obligation already overlooked once.

Two provisions set West Virginia apart from most states. Veteran-owned businesses are exempt from the formation fee under § 59-1-2(j) and from the annual report fee for their first four years, a concession rarely reflected in national comparisons. The Secretary of State's 2026 schedule additionally offers a $50 option covering two years, for owners who prefer to prepay rather than track a second deadline.
